An understanding of the distribution of vehicular traffic across the carriageway is very important to a highway transportation engineer for planning and designs of new highways and also for operational improvement of the existing facilities. The traffic on Indian roads is heterogeneous in nature, as it is composed of a number of vehicles categories. Vehicles with varying static and dynamics characteristics share the same road space. The peculiar mix of a wide variety of the vehicular types, each with its own distinct characteristics regarding the dimensions and speeds attained give rise to certain complex behavior of distribution when the constituents interact with one another along the roadway, thereby resulting in lack of lane discipline.
